As election returns from Massachusetts began to trickle in on Tuesday, January 19, one could almost hear a feint roll of the drums and the shrill tune of a fife as modern day minutemen from the Bay State, once again, declared their dissatisfaction with abusive government and taxation without representation. The unprecedented and staggering victory by Scott Brown in the election to fill Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat, although bloodless, has sent just as strong a message as those who fought at Cambridge and the North Bridge in 1775. The message was simple and unmistakable, “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!”
Over the past year you could feel a tide rising of repudiation of the policies and legislation proposed by the Obama Administration and the feckless leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. The tiger of change that Obama, Reid and Pelosi so skillfully rode to victory in 2008 has thrown its riders and is in the process of devouring them whole. Democratic leadership is now learning that voters’ desire for change was not a wholesale shift to the left and a relentless drive to socialism, but a change back to the values and government that served to make this a great nation. Madam De Farge has been emboldened and she is at her knitting, making note of those who must fall in 2010.
Now that the dogs of politics have been unleashed, there is no telling who the casualties may be as indignant voters call wayward politicians to task for their action or inaction. When the heads start to roll, no Democrat who has supported the President’s legislative agenda will be safe. This brings us to Indiana Senator Evan Bayh and Second District Representative Joe Donnelly.
Senator Evan Bayh and Representative Joe Donnelly have done an excellent job over the last year of avoiding their share of the blame for the Obama-Pelosi-Reid debacle in Washington. Careful to avoid contentious town hall meetings and debates, both men have been able to portray a “blue dog” image of moderation in all things. Well I’m here to tell you that the old “blue dog” just doesn’t hunt! Bayh and Donnelly have cast key votes on excessive budgets, massive debt ceilings, bailouts, money-wasting stimulus plans, tax-dodging Presidential appointments, tax increases and other wastes of the taxpayer dollar. Occasionally, their puppet masters in Pelosi and Reid have let them slip off the legislative hook and vote for the folks back home. However, when the chips have been on the line, both Bayh and Donnelly have done exactly what their Democratic masters have dictated. This approach has been disingenuous at best and shows a marked arrogance in regard to their Hoosier constituents.
Much like the Wizard in the Wizard Of Oz, Bayh and Donnelly would like us to ignore the man behind the curtain and focus on the smoke and fireworks. However, the common man has become increasingly wary of this tactic, as evidenced by the historic blowout victory of Scott Brown in Massachusetts, and are bound to provide a day of reckoning for the wayward Senator and Congressman this coming November.
Evan Bayh has progressively become more and more like his father. Each year that goes by, Evan becomes more restless with his mundane Senate job and longs for his ultimate goal of the White House. He no more wants to represent the people of Indiana than Barney Frank does. Bayh has become the poster child of sitting too long in office for his own or anyone else’s good. There is no doubt that the compensation for his Senate work has been good. He has been able to parlay his Senate seat into lucrative board of director positions for his wife and they are now worth multiple millions of dollars. It’s a nice gig if you can get it and if you can sleep at night and if the voters don’t pry into the details too much.
Joe Donnelly, the product of a George Soros, Acorn and big labor team effort, has continually dodged constituents on such issues as energy independence, Federal spending and government waste. He is seen during carefully crafted photo ops and appearances and will not engage his constituents in meaningful town hall meetings. His votes betray his true liberal leanings and are a sharp contrast to his self-proclaimed “blue dog” image. Well the “blue dog” has fleas and Donnelly will be held to account for betraying his Hoosier roots and conservative constituency.
Our founding fathers pledged their lives and their fortunes when they declared independence and threw off the yoke of British tyranny. It is a challenge for the modern patriot to arise and hold the representatives of the arrogant, socialist, intellectual elites in Washington responsible for exploding budgets, burgeoning unemployment, massive debt and governmental abuse that defies our great Constitution. We must come together to vote out Evan Bayn and Joe Donnelly this coming November.
